Some motivation to turn our eyes UP!
Some motivation to turn our eyes UP!

Although I'm backlogged on blog posts for past events, I just had to write today's experience while it's still fresh. First of all, Happy New Year! 2024 ended up being a very big year for the Delcour family with our home renovation and making the uncharacteristically outlandish decision to move to Germany. Oh, and Casey starting his dream job as a pilot with United. While it was a year of change and growth, it was exhausting. My prayer is that 2025 is the year that we enjoy the fruits of the previous year's stress, anxiety and overall work, and that it's a year of peace for everyone!

So with that said, as Catholics, January 1 is a holy day of obligation (the Solemnity of Mary), which means that we must go to Mass. While it can be tough to move on 1/1 if you've celebrated a bit too much the night before, it's a beautiful way to start the new year right. Casey had our one car with him at work (no holidays for him) so the girls and I picked one of the many churches in town to go for Mass. Mainzer Dom was kind of sad on Christmas Day, so we picked St. Peter's. WOW. This amazing Rococo masterpiece was unlike anything the girls had ever seen! Beautiful organ music with impressive male and female cantors. And this mass was well-attended too! The unfortunate thing about going to Mass with the locals, is that we can't understand the readings or the homily. But we do our best to sing along auf Deutsch - the organ music is loud enough to drown out our fumbles with the words. But what a treat to worship in such awe-inspiring beauty. I'm so glad my girls are experiencing churches built in times where art and architecture were elevated, meant to draw the eyes, hearts and minds to Heaven. Our hearts are full! 2025, let's go!
